Supporting Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September 28, 2022

Throughout the month of September, and all across the U.S., The AArrow Sign Spinners are donating our time and effort to support Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

According to the CDC, suicide rates increased 30% between 2000–2018, and declined in 2019 and 2020. Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States with 45,979 deaths in 2020. This is about one death every 11 minutes. The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher. In 2020, an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) offers 24/7 call, text and chat access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing suicidal, substance use, or mental health crises, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. 988 was established to improve access to crisis services in a way that meets our country’s growing suicide and mental health-related crisis care needs. 988 provides easier access to the Lifeline network and related crisis resources, which are distinct from the public safety purposes of 911 (where the focus is on dispatching Emergency Medical Services, fire and police as needed).

On July 16, 2022, the U.S. transitioned to the 988 3-digit code for people to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The AArrow Sign Spinners are using their advertising and marketing talents to extend the reach of this messaging.
