We love it when someone from our team shows up somewhere unexpected. Jose Castanon, one of our sign spinners, took a small role in the short film Mia, Indeterminate, and we’re excited to share it with you.
Mia, Indeterminate is a short comedic drama about a woman who has recently moved her mother, Bird, into her home. Bird is magnetic and funny, but living with her is often exhausting, and she lives with a mental illness. As Mia follows her through one eventful day, she starts to see that she can’t manage everything, and that sometimes the better choice is to loosen her grip and go along for the ride.
The Story Behind It
Director Lili Peper has described the film as a different kind of coming-of-age story, one that happens later in life. It’s the moment you realize your parent is a whole person with flaws and quirks, and you start forming your own opinions about the choices they make. The film also looks honestly at what it means to care for someone you love who is struggling with their mental health. Both Peper and the writer have personal experience with that, and it shows in how warmly and truthfully the story is told.
At its heart, it’s a tribute to the complicated, tender, sometimes exhausting bond between mothers and daughters.
