Houston, Tx – It’s no secret that Houston is home to some of the best sign spinners on the planet. That’s why they keep winning spinner of the month! That’s because with the intense Houston heat and humidity, you have to be tough to have an outdoor job. This month, we want to recognize an AArrow legend as sign spinner of the month. Jimmel “Big Tex” Martin, you are the sign spinner of the month for September!
Jimmel has been spinning for 9 years and has traveled to more AArrow markets than most spinners out there. During his sign spinning career, he’s been to Dallas, Austin Charlotte, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City, Orlando, Montgomery, Tallahasee, Denver, San Diego, Korea, and obviously his home market of Houston. Korea has been his favorite so far, the sign spinning culture, the korean friends, and the food!
Jimmel originally got started sign spinning by applying to a random job on craigslist when he was 24 in his home city of Norfolk, Virginia. He found out that the job was sign spinning at the orientation and decided then and there that he would become one of the greats. Flash forward 9 years, and he is now an integral part of the Houston market, helping his team out any way that he can.
Like many sign spinners, Sign spinning is more than just a job, it’s a passion. For Jimmel, Sign Spinning is an art form that is full of individual expression and originality. “No two sign spinners can spin alike, its what makes it so original. It’s more than just a job,” says Jimmel. Jimmels favorite tricks are skill saws, the DMV flip, and his signature that he calls “the hardest man working” (which is a behind the back helicopter-tripod + one handed pushup). I know it sounds insane, but he actually does this move, on street corners!
Jimmel is an avid gamer and a digital artists, he designs graphics and writes code for websites. When he isn’t spinning signs he’s chilling with friends or jamming out to hip-hop, EDM, and (Wait for it) DISCO! One of Jimmel’s best qualities is that he is always trying to help someone out, one of the more trustworthy people out there!
Aside from spinning signs and making art, Jimmel is all about health and fitness. He’s lost 75 lbs since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March! Making us all a bit jealous out here.
One day, Jimmel hopes to visit another international market and get featured in a sign spinning music video or commercial. Until then, he’s trying to utilize his graphic and web talents to make a career. His favorite pizza is bacon and pineapple, hot fire! Thanks for sharing Jimmel, we wish you all the best and keep doing what you do! Congrats on being Sign Spinner of the Month for September 2020!
“Invest in your passions as much as you invest in your work!” – Jimmel Martin.
